Kerala to be the First e-Literate State in India

Chief Minister of Kerala V S Achuthanandan said Kerala will be declared as India’s first e-Literate state by the end of the year. The State Government launched an ambitious project called Akshaya in 2003 to address the issue of digital divide and the backward Malappuram district became the first e-Literate state, with at least one member of a family learning basic computer skills and earning an e-mail ID.

He further said that “Thiruvanananthapuram and Kochi have emerged as one of the most attractive IT destinations in India. Many nationally and internationally renowned companies have already come forward with requests for space. We are developing parks in all districts in a hub-and-spoke model – the hubs will be Thiruvanananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode and spokes will be in place in all the remaining districts. Work has commenced on the state government’s plan to develop Kochi and Thiruvanananthapuram as the foremost IT locations in the region. The Technocity here and the Smart City in Kochi are global standard initiatives with most modern state-of-the-art infrastructure. The telecom density in the state is double the national average with electronic exchanges and fibre-optic cables running up to village level.”
