In a new initiative of the European Commission on Thursday, a public consultation on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology was launched. The technology can be used for a variety of purposes such as privacy, data protection and information technology.

The usage of this technology could be beneficial in terms of e-governance, national defence and security for the public sector. On the other side, it can also be used for purposes of personal safety, sports and leisure, smart homes and smart cities.

The public consultation is directed towards supporting the Commission's upcoming 'Recommendation on RFID' which is stated to be adopted in the later half of this year. The recommendation is devised towards a collective agenda to keep Europe in the top slot in the highly competitive world economy and giving its citizens the options to ensure privacy and security.
