The Parliament of Uganda has approved the government's proposal to borrow $30 million from China to improve the communication sector.

The government has signed a memorandum of understanding with a Chinese contractor, M/S Huawei Tech Co. Ltd to work on the project. The government will borrow the money from the Export and Import Bank of China, will fund the National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure project. In the first phase of the project, E-Government infrastructure will be established in Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja. All district headquarters would also be connected to the Internet and information and communication access points would be established at sub-counties.
