The Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh has asked state governments to pay attention to the urban governance reforms and modernisation of infrastructure in cities.

While speaking at the meeting to review the progress of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, he said that adequate financial resources will be made available provided the commitments undertaken are fulfilled. The government has prepared development plans for sixty three cities, including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Vijayawada and Vishakapatnam. These cities will have 100 per cent water supply. While, four cities, including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Vijayawada would be fully covered by modern sewerage systems. Cities like Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow and Rajkot will have systems for collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of wastes.
