Indian Government approves the expansion of community radio stations

Indian Government has approved the expansion of such radio station by non-profit organisations after ensuring security clearances from the Defence and Home Ministries.

According to Information and Broadcasting Minister, Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, the community radio will not include news casting and current affairs programme and comprehensive deal programmes by Ministry of Home Affairs, Defence, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and HRD. The political parties and their affiliates and trade unions would not be allowed to operate community radio stations (CRS). There are 15 such radio stations, which are operating from 2002.
