Mission 2007 to establish knowledge centres in 6,00,000 villages of India as envisioned by M.S.Swaminathan, chairman of the MSSR Foundation (MSSRF)and Mission chairperson.

The main objective of the mission was to facilitate and accelerate through multi-stakeholder collaborations of providing knowledge-based livelihoods and income-generation opportunities for poor women and men, farming communities and all disadvantaged people. Yet another core objective of the mission is strive towards hunger free India that, is yet to be realised owing to the stagnant conditions in agriculture productivity. Need based people-driven models were told to adopt for improving productivity  and constantly upgrading it with required technology and good ecological and management practices. The need for harnessing Information and Communications Technology was also expressed to address the issues related to health of rural population.
