Carbon Emission Reporting

India has emerged as a global leader in carbon emission reporting, securing a spot in the top three countries alongside Brazil and China, according to the latest Boston Consulting Group (BCG) report. The report reveals that 12% of Indian companies are actively reporting their emissions, compared to the global average of 9%.

The “BCG X CO2 AI Global Report” also highlights that 24% of Indian companies have set emission reduction targets, significantly surpassing the global average of 16%. Additionally, 15% of Indian companies are on track to reduce emissions in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal, compared to 11% globally.

“India is emerging as a global leader in decarbonisation, demonstrating a strong commitment to tackling climate change. With comprehensive emission reduction targets across all emission scopes, Indian companies are not only reducing their carbon footprint but also realising significant financial benefits,” said Anirban Mukherjee, Managing Director Lead, Climate and Sustainability, BCG India.

The BCG and CO2 AI Carbon Emissions Survey, which surveyed 1,864 executives from 16 major industries across 26 countries, found that while only 9% of nearly 2,000 global companies reported comprehensive emissions, Indian companies are ahead of the curve in both reporting and target-setting. The respondents represent organisations responsible for around 45% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with annual revenues ranging from USD 100 million to over USD 20 billion.

Diana Dimitrova, BCG Managing Partner and Director, noted, “Too few companies are seizing the financial gains offered from decarbonisation. By mastering essential foundational actions like measurement, reporting, target setting, and taking advanced steps toward sustainability, these companies can become more efficient, more profitable, and demonstrate a stronger commitment to a greener future.”
