PM Jan Dhan Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), emphasising its transformative impact on financial inclusion across India. He congratulated all beneficiaries and commended those who contributed to the scheme’s success. Modi highlighted that Jan Dhan Yojana has been pivotal in enhancing financial inclusion and restoring dignity to millions, particularly women, youth, and marginalised communities.
The Prime Minister’s acknowledgement comes as the scheme celebrates a decade since its inception in 2014 under the NDA government. The scheme aimed to integrate millions of Indians into the formal financial system. As of August 14, 2024, the scheme boasts over 53.1 crore beneficiaries with total deposits exceeding ₹2.3 lakh crore, with nearly 30 crore of these beneficiaries being women.

Marking this milestone, Modi shared on X, “Today, we mark a momentous occasion— #10YearsOfJanDhan. Congratulations to all the beneficiaries and compliments to all those who worked to make this scheme a success. Jan Dhan Yojana has been paramount in boosting financial inclusion and giving dignity to crores of people, especially women, youth, and marginalised communities.”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also lauded the scheme, echoing Modi’s sentiments: “Today, we mark a momentous occasion— #10YearsOfJanDhan. Congratulations to all the beneficiaries and compliments to all those who worked to make this scheme a success.”

The Jan Dhan Yojana has made financial services accessible to millions through basic savings and deposit accounts, remittances, credit, insurance, and pension schemes. The scheme’s benefits include no minimum balance requirement, interest on deposits, and a RuPay Debit card with accident insurance coverage. Additionally, PMJDY accounts are eligible for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and other government schemes.

On LinkedIn, Modi further elaborated on the significance of this initiative in a post titled “A Decade of Financial Inclusion – the PM Jan Dhan Yojana.” He wrote, “Jan Dhan Yojana is about dignity, empowerment, and opportunity. Today, when we mark #10YearsOfJanDhan, sharing a post I wrote on @LinkedIn highlighting the transformative outcomes of this initiative.”
