
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has been taking up projects for developing affordable technologies to upgrade technology base of the sector.
“In collaboration with premier academic and technical institutes, 124 technologies have been developed for Khadi as well as Village Industries,” Kalraj Mishra, Union Minister for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, said in Lok Sabha.

KVIC, has established a number of sector specific research institutions viz i) Central Bee Research & Training Institute, Pune for honey, ii) Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute, Jaipur for handmade paper, iii) Dr. B.R Ambedkar Institute of Rural Technology & Management and Institute of Renewable Energy, Nashik for training, iv) C.B. Kora Institute of Village Industries for training, v) Central Village Pottery Institute, Khanapur (Belgaum) for pottery, vi) Central Palmgur and Palm Products Institute, Chennai for palm related products, vii) Fibre Design cum Development Centre, Trivandrum for coir products.

KVIC has also supported 42 Khadi Institutions and 64 Village Industries institutions and units to set up in-house testing laboratories so that the products quality could be tested at an affordable cost.

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialisation (MGIRI) undertakes research, design and extension activities for the rural industrial sector.
Some of the new technologies finalised and transferred to rural sector by MGIRI during the Eleventh Five Year Plan period are as follows:
- A range of Solar based Industrial machineries such as Solar Charka, Solar Potter wheel, Solar food dryer.
- Low cost Packaging machine
- Biogas power plant (10 kW & 15 kW)
- Biomass charcoal briquetting system
- LED lighting for indoor and outdoor lighting
- Design and development of Green Chili feeding & cutting machine so as to process Green Chili Powder
