In order to ensure that environmental and economic objectives are pursued properly, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday batted for transparent regulatory regimes.
Putting thrust on protection of the environment and promoting development need not amount to a zero sum game, Singh said. He emphasized that what is required is regulatory regimes that are transparent, accountable and subject to oversight and monitoring.
“Indeed, regulatory regimes are often the basic necessary condition to ensure that environmental and economic objectives are pursued in tandem,” he said this while inaugurating the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) here.
Population explosion, changing consumption patterns and the consequent pressure on precious are real challenges that India faces in its pursuit of economic growth and the amelioration of poverty.
