Leading one of Gujarat’s premier fertiliser and chemical companies, Dr Rajendra Kumar, IAS, Managing Director, Gujarat State Fertilisers & Chemicals (GSFC), is driving the organisation’s focus on sustainable agriculture, innovation, and green manufacturing. In an exclusive interaction with Hemangini Kant Rajput and Elma Fatima of Elets News Network (ENN), he shares GSFC’s vision for strengthening food security and sustainable industrial growth.

Q. Gujarat State Fertilisers & Chemicals (GSFC) has played a pivotal role in supporting Gujarat’s agricultural and industrial development for decades. What are some of the emerging challenges related to food security, sustainability, and changing market demands?
India’s farming sector is at a critical point where it needs to balance producing more food, being sustainable, and dealing with the effects of climate change. We are facing challenges such as changing weather patterns, smaller farm holdings, deteriorating soil health, and the overuse of natural resources. On top of that, disruptions in global supply chains and significant fluctuations in energy and raw material prices are making the fertiliser industry increasingly unpredictable. We have to find ways to make farming more productive, sustainable, climate-resilient, and economically viable while keeping prices stable. This is a tough task, but it is crucial for the future of our country.
We see challenges as opportunities to innovate at GSFC. Our goal is to provide top-quality, efficient plant nutrition solutions while using resources responsibly. We believe the future is about getting more from less, higher productivity with lower environmental impact. By continuously improving technology, offering a diverse range of products, promoting the use of organic fertilisers, and working closely with farmers, GSFC is dedicated to strengthening India’s food security and supporting sustainable agricultural growth. In this way, we can help farmers grow more food while taking care of the mother soil.

Q. What initiatives is GSFC undertaking to promote balanced nutrient management, speciality fertilisers, and sustainable farming practices?

Balanced nutrient management is essential for maintaining soil health and improving crop productivity. GSFC has consistently promoted integrated plant nutrition through a comprehensive range of nitrogenous, phosphatic, potassic, and micronutrient fertilisers, enabling farmers to apply nutrients based on crop and soil requirements.
The Company also conducts Integrated Nutrient Management awareness programmes to promote the balanced use of fertilisers and improve soil fertility through Farmer Youth Training Programmes, field demonstrations, digital advisory platforms, Kisan Sangosthi camps, the NAMO Drone Didi Project, and publications such as Krishi Jivan. GSFC continuously educates farmers on scientific fertiliser application and sustainable farming practices.
In addition, GSFC continues to expand its portfolio of speciality fertilisers that enhance nutrient-use efficiency, improve crop quality, and minimise environmental impact. The Company’s objective is to equip farmers with the knowledge and innovative solutions needed to increase productivity while preserving soil health for future generations.
Q. The chemical industry is undergoing a significant transformation driven by innovation, circular economy principles, and environmental regulations. How is GSFC integrating sustainability, operational efficiency, and green technologies?
At GSFC, sustainability has always been a key part of our growth and development. We have continuously upgraded our facilities to improve energy efficiency, optimise resource utilisation, and reduce our environmental impact. Our main manufacturing complex is equipped with advanced systems for pollution control, water conservation, waste reduction, and environmental monitoring. We believe in using resources responsibly and minimising our environmental footprint, and we have consistently worked towards making our operations more sustainable.
GSFC has also invested significantly in renewable energy, including wind and solar power. Today, nearly 50% of our energy requirement is met through green energy sources. We have also initiated rainwater harvesting and are focusing on recycling resources. These initiatives reflect the Company’s commitment to operational excellence and environmental stewardship. GSFC is committed to sustainable industrial growth and continues to set an example through its adoption of clean energy and responsible manufacturing practices.
Q. The Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference provides a platform for fostering partnerships and investment opportunities. What areas of collaboration do you see for industry stakeholders, technology providers, startups, and research institutions in advancing GSFC’s growth agenda?
Innovation is no longer a solo effort; it is driven by collaboration. The future of the fertiliser and chemical industry depends on strong partnerships among industry leaders, academic institutions, technology providers, startups, and research organisations. By working together, these stakeholders can combine knowledge, expertise, and resources to develop innovative solutions for the future.
At GSFC, we believe such collaborations can create significant opportunities in areas such as green chemistry, digital manufacturing, process automation, renewable energy, precision agriculture, carbon footprint reduction, circular resource management, and effective waste management. We are also open to partnering on product development, operational excellence, and strengthening supply chain resilience.
The Vibrant Gujarat platform provides an excellent opportunity to build meaningful partnerships that foster innovation, improve industrial competitiveness, and contribute to the country’s sustainable development. By working together, we can accelerate growth, enhance efficiency, and build a stronger and more resilient future for the industry.
Q. With increasing emphasis on climate resilience and sustainable agriculture, what role do you envision for the fertiliser and chemical industry in supporting India’s long-term environmental and food security goals?
India’s food and nutritional security depends significantly on the fertiliser and chemical industry. However, it is no longer just about producing more; it is about producing sustainably. The industry must help farmers improve productivity while adopting farming practices that are environmentally responsible and resilient to climate change.
We need to develop products that improve soil health and promote the efficient use of natural resources. At the same time, companies should adopt clean technologies, renewable energy, water conservation, and sustainable resource management in their operations. We believe economic growth and environmental protection must go hand in hand.
At GSFC, we are committed to developing products that help farmers use nutrients more efficiently, reduce waste, and promote sustainable agriculture. We are equally focused on expanding clean energy use, conserving water, and adopting circular resource management practices. By combining innovation, sustainability, and science-driven agriculture, we can contribute meaningfully to India’s long-term food security while protecting the environment for future generations.
