Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel is likely to receive a service extension beyond his scheduled retirement on August 31, 2026, according to sources. If approved, the extension will allow the senior IAS officer to continue leading the state’s administrative machinery during a crucial phase marked by governance, development and security-related priorities.
While an official notification is yet to be issued, the proposal is reportedly under consideration by the Centre.

Sources indicate that the government is examining a proposal to extend the tenure of Puneet Kumar Goel, a 1991-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre.

If the proposal receives approval, Goel will continue as Manipur’s Chief Secretary beyond his superannuation date, ensuring continuity in the state’s administrative leadership.
Officials believe that retaining experienced leadership could help maintain the momentum of ongoing governance and development initiatives.
Ensuring Administrative Continuity
Manipur has been navigating several administrative and governance challenges over the past few years. In this context, continuity at the highest bureaucratic level is considered important for effective coordination among departments and between the state and the Central Government.
As Chief Secretary, Goel has been overseeing policy implementation, administrative coordination and the functioning of key government departments since assuming office in July 2025.
Took Charge as Chief Secretary in 2025
Puneet Kumar Goel took over as the Chief Secretary of Manipur on July 21, 2025, succeeding Prashant Kumar Singh, who was appointed Secretary of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST).
In addition to serving as the state’s top civil servant, Goel also holds the additional responsibilities of Chief Vigilance Commissioner of Manipur and Principal Resident Commissioner of Manipur Bhawan, New Delhi.
Distinguished Career Across the AGMUT Cadre
With nearly 35 years of administrative experience, Goel has served in several important positions across the AGMUT cadre.
His previous assignments include serving as Chief Secretary of Goa, holding senior leadership roles in the power sector, including Director (Power), and serving as Commissioner (Transport) in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Throughout his career, he has worked extensively in areas such as urban development, infrastructure, finance, governance and public administration.

Born on August 3, 1966, Puneet Kumar Goel has a distinguished academic record.
He holds a Ph.D. in Renewable Energy and Power Electronics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, an M.Tech. in Power Systems Engineering from IIT Delhi, and an M.S. in Computer Networks from California University.
His technical expertise, combined with decades of administrative experience, has contributed to his reputation as a seasoned civil servant.

Although discussions regarding the extension are underway, no formal order has been issued so far.
