Senior nuclear scientist Dr Komal Kapoor has assumed the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) as well as Director (Technical) of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL). He takes over the responsibility following the relieving of former CMD Dr Anesh Sharma, who has joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Dr Kapoor will continue to serve as Chief Executive of the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) while handling the additional responsibilities at ECIL.
Three Decades of Experience in India’s Nuclear Programme
A distinguished metallurgical engineer, Dr Komal Kapoor began his career after joining the 33rd batch of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Training School in 1989. Since then, he has been associated with the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), where he has served in several key positions over the past three decades.
His experience spans nuclear fuel production, materials engineering and strategic project management, making him one of the senior professionals in India’s nuclear sector.
Leading Major Nuclear Fuel Projects
As the head of NFC, Dr Kapoor has played an important role in supporting India’s nuclear power programme. He is currently overseeing the development of a major greenfield nuclear fuel facility in Kota, Rajasthan, which is expected to meet the fuel requirements of upcoming nuclear reactors across the country.
His work has focused on improving nuclear fuel quality, enhancing reactor performance and strengthening radiological safety standards. He has also led collaborative research initiatives with national and international institutions in the field of nuclear engineering.
Strong Academic and Research Background
Dr Kapoor holds a doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from IIT Bombay. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Mumbai, and is also a guest faculty member at the University of Hyderabad.
He has published more than 100 research papers in reputed national and international journals and conference proceedings, contributing significantly to research in nuclear materials and engineering.

Brings Rich Expertise to ECIL
With extensive experience in technology, engineering and strategic leadership, Dr Kapoor is expected to provide strong guidance to ECIL as it continues to strengthen its role in electronics, defence, atomic energy and strategic sectors.
Over the course of his career, he has received several recognitions, including the NMD Young Metallurgist Award from the Ministry of Steel, reflecting his contributions to metallurgy and nuclear engineering. His appointment is expected to ensure continuity in ECIL’s leadership while supporting the organisation’s focus on technological innovation and national strategic programmes.
