Oil India Limited (OIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to strengthen collaboration in research, innovation and advanced technology development for the energy sector.

The partnership aims to combine the expertise of one of India’s leading energy companies with the country’s premier scientific research organisation to develop innovative solutions that support sustainable growth and energy security.
Strategic Collaboration for Energy Innovation

The MoU was signed at OIL House in Noida by the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India Limited and the Director General of CSIR in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.

The agreement establishes a framework for joint research and technology development across several key areas of the energy industry, with a focus on improving efficiency, sustainability and operational performance.
Officials described the partnership as an important step toward accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies in India’s energy sector.

Focus on Upstream and Downstream Operations
Under the collaboration, OIL and CSIR will work together on research projects related to both upstream and downstream oil and gas operations.
The partnership will focus on areas such as:
- Hydrocarbon exploration and production
- Reservoir optimisation techniques
- Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)
- Refining and downstream technologies
- Operational efficiency improvements
- Cost-effective energy solutions
The objective is to develop innovative technologies that can improve productivity while reducing operational challenges.
Renewable Energy and Sustainable Solutions
Beyond conventional oil and gas operations, the collaboration will also explore opportunities in renewable energy and sustainable energy practices.
Both organisations plan to undertake research aimed at supporting the transition toward cleaner energy systems while ensuring long-term energy security.
The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on balancing traditional energy requirements with emerging sustainability goals.
Research on Critical Minerals
The MoU also includes cooperation in the field of critical minerals, which are increasingly important for modern energy technologies, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing.
Research in this area is expected to contribute to India’s efforts to strengthen domestic capabilities in strategic mineral resources and reduce dependence on imports.
Driving Technological Advancement
Officials said the partnership will create opportunities for developing cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions that can be applied across the energy value chain.
By combining industry experience with scientific research capabilities, the two organisations aim to accelerate the development and deployment of new technologies that can address current and future challenges facing the energy sector.
The collaboration is also expected to encourage knowledge sharing, technology transfer and joint innovation initiatives.
Supporting India’s Energy Security Goals
Oil India stated that the agreement aligns with its broader vision of strengthening technological capabilities through strategic partnerships with leading research institutions.
The company believes innovation and research will play a crucial role in improving operational performance, enhancing resource efficiency and supporting the country’s growing energy needs.
The collaboration is expected to contribute to national objectives related to energy security, technological self-reliance and sustainable development.
Strengthening Industry-Academia Collaboration
The partnership between OIL and CSIR highlights the increasing importance of collaboration between industry and scientific institutions in addressing complex energy challenges.
By bringing together research expertise and practical industry experience, the two organisations aim to create solutions that deliver long-term benefits for the energy sector and the broader economy.
As India continues to expand its energy infrastructure while pursuing sustainability goals, such collaborative initiatives are expected to play a vital role in driving innovation and supporting the country’s future energy landscape.
