In a significant development, Harish Kumar Gupta (IPS: 1992: AP) has been appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh, three months ahead of his scheduled retirement. In accordance with the Supreme Court guidelines, the state government has granted Gupta a fixed tenure of two years, ensuring his continuation in the role until May 2027. He was originally set to retire in August 2025.

Prior to this appointment, Gupta was serving as the officiating DGP with additional charge of Director General, Vigilance and Enforcement, and also functioned as the ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Government in the General Administration Department.

The appointment follows an Empanelment Committee Meeting convened by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on April 30, 2025, in New Delhi. The meeting was held in response to a formal proposal from the State Government. After a detailed evaluation, the commission submitted a panel of eligible senior IPS officers, leading to Gupta’s selection.
