
Abhishek Singh, a 1995-batch IAS officer of the Nagaland cadre, took charge today as the Director General of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. He will also continue to serve in his current role as Additional Secretary in the Ministry. He succeeds Inder Pal Singh, the outgoing DG of NIC.
With nearly three decades of public service, Abhishek Singh brings extensive experience in governance, administration, and policy formulation. He is widely known for leveraging technology to improve public service delivery and governance outcomes. In his current role at MeitY, Singh oversees critical domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technologies, Cybersecurity, and Digital Skilling. He also holds the additional charge as CEO of the India AI Mission.
He previously served as CEO of Karmayogi Bharat, MyGov, National e-Governance Division (NeGD), and Digital India Corporation. Between 2017 and 2019, Singh held key positions in the Government of Nagaland, including Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Urban Development, Personnel & Administrative Reforms, and as Home Commissioner. Prior to that, he served as Executive Director at the Food Corporation of India, where he led IT, engineering, and storage initiatives.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur with B.Tech and M.Tech degrees, Singh also holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, where he was a Mason Fellow.

Throughout his career, Singh has worked in Uttar Pradesh and Nagaland, managing grassroots development, law and order, disaster response, and implementation of welfare programmes. He has collaborated with multilateral agencies like DFID, UNICEF, and WHO on initiatives such as the Child’s Environment Project and the Pulse Polio Eradication Programme. He has also overseen the conduct of elections to Parliament, State Assemblies, and local bodies.
His extensive field experience, combined with a forward-looking approach to digital governance, positions him to drive transformative change at NIC and further India’s digital transformation journey.
