Renewable energy accounted for a record-breaking 32 per cent of global electricity generation in 2024, marking a major leap forward in the global transition towards cleaner power sources, as highlighted in a new report by energy think tank Ember. This milestone was achieved alongside a 4 per cent rise in overall electricity demand, driven by intensifying heatwaves, expanding data centre operations, and increasing concerns around energy security.
The growth of wind, solar, and hydropower exceeded the previous record of 30 per cent set in 2023. According to Ember’s Global Electricity Review, renewable power generation added a substantial 858 terawatt-hours (TWh) to the global grid in 2024 — surpassing the total annual electricity consumption of both the UK and France combined.
Euan Graham, electricity and data analyst at Ember, attributed the rise to mounting global anxieties over energy security, especially in the wake of U.S. tariffs introduced during the Trump administration. “Countries are thinking about their security and energy security more than ever before, which makes wind and solar power increasingly attractive,” Graham noted.

Despite prevailing geopolitical tensions and lingering economic uncertainties caused by trade wars and protectionist measures, renewable energy demonstrated remarkable resilience. It played a critical role in satisfying the increasing electricity demands driven by emerging technologies such as electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and heat pumps. The report stated that these technologies alone contributed 0.7 per cent to global electricity demand growth in 2024.

However, coal remained the dominant source of electricity globally, accounting for 34 per cent of the energy mix — a modest decline from 36 per cent in 2023. Gas-fired power maintained a steady 22 per cent share, while nuclear energy’s contribution edged down slightly to 9 per cent.
As the global energy ecosystem undergoes rapid transformation, the report underlines the growing significance of renewable sources in addressing rising demand, bolstering energy security, and navigating the dual challenges of climate change and geopolitical volatility.
