The Punjab government has appointed senior IAS officer Ajoy Kumar Sinha as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. (PSPCL) following the retirement of Baldev Singh Sran. Sinha, a 1996-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, will take on this role in addition to his existing responsibilities until a permanent appointment is made.
Sinha is currently serving as the Principal Secretary of Finance and also holds additional charges as Principal Secretary of Power, and Principal Secretary of new & Renewable Energy Sources. Furthermore, he is the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Punjab State Transmission Corporation Ltd. (PSTCL). His extensive experience in the energy and finance sectors is expected to contribute to the efficient management of PSPCL.
The tenure of the outgoing CMD, Baldev Singh Sran, concluded upon his retirement at the age of 65. While there were discussions regarding an extension of his term, the proposal did not materialize.
The appointment of Sinha comes at a critical time for Punjab’s power sector, with a focus on improving power distribution, integrating renewable energy sources, and ensuring financial stability for PSPCL. Given his dual role in both finance and power administration, his leadership is expected to streamline operations and drive policy implementation in alignment with the state government’s objectives.
As the interim CMD, Sinha will oversee crucial operations, including power generation, transmission, and distribution, while ensuring that PSPCL continues to meet the energy demands of the state efficiently. The government is likely to finalize a permanent appointment in due course, keeping in mind the long-term strategic goals of Punjab’s power infrastructure.
