Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI)

In a significant step towards modernizing India’s National Statistical System, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) under its Data Innovation Lab initiative. The agreement, signed on January 30, 2025, aims to enhance data collection, processing, and dissemination through cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Big Data Analytics.

The Data Innovation Lab was launched in July 2024 as part of MoSPI’s efforts to bring research-driven solutions into official statistics. It serves as a hub for leveraging emerging technologies to improve data quality and enable real-time analytics. Over the past year, MoSPI has undertaken several initiatives to reform and modernize statistical methodologies, making them more responsive to the needs of policymakers and stakeholders.

As part of its Outreach Activities, MoSPI has actively engaged with leading academic institutions to foster collaboration. More than 100 reputed institutions, including IITs and IIMs, have been approached, with several MoUs already signed. The partnership with IIIT-Delhi further strengthens this initiative by bringing together government agencies and academic researchers to tackle real-world statistical challenges.

A major goal of this collaboration is to develop innovative methodologies for official statistics, focusing on areas such as data integration, predictive modelling, and real-time analytics. By tapping into the expertise of academia and data science researchers, MoSPI aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of India’s statistical ecosystem.

The MoSPI-IIIT Delhi MoU is expected to have a long-term impact on India’s statistical infrastructure. The partnership will facilitate:

  • Knowledge sharing between data science experts and government statisticians.
  • Implementation of AI and ML tools for better data-driven decision-making.
  • Development of advanced statistical models for improving economic and social policy insights.

By integrating modern technological solutions, MoSPI aims to strengthen India’s data governance framework, ensuring that statistical outputs are not only accurate but also adaptable to dynamic economic and social changes.

Speaking on the collaboration, officials from MoSPI emphasized that innovation in official statistics is crucial for informed policymaking. The partnership with IIIT-Delhi will contribute to the broader objective of making India’s statistical system more robust, transparent, and future-ready.

This initiative aligns with India’s vision of leveraging technology for governance, ensuring that data-driven insights contribute to better economic planning and policy formulation. With a growing need for real-time and predictive analytics, such partnerships are set to play a crucial role in shaping India’s data ecosystem in the years to come.
