Bhupender Gupta Gets Six-Month Extension as SJVN CMD

The Ministry of Power has extended the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN Limited held by Bhupender Gupta, who is also CMD of NHPC Limited, for another six months from August 1, 2026.

The extension will continue for six months, or until a regular incumbent takes charge or further orders are issued, whichever is earlier.

Gupta Continues as SJVN CMD

Gupta has been handling the additional charge of SJVN CMD since May 1, 2025. He assumed charge as CMD of NHPC Limited on September 4, 2025, making him responsible for leadership roles at both power-sector PSUs.

Over Three Decades in the Power Sector

An electrical engineering graduate and MBA in Operations Management, Gupta has more than 34 years of professional experience, including over three decades with central public sector enterprises in the power sector.

He began his career with ACC Ltd in 1991 and joined SJVN in 1995. At SJVN, he worked across the planning, erection, commissioning and operation and maintenance of electromechanical systems at the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Power Plant.

He also served on deputation in Bhutan from 2002 to 2005 for the 1,020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project.

Experience Across Major Power Projects

Gupta joined REC Limited in 2007, where he worked on financing hydro and thermal power projects. He later held leadership roles at REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd., overseeing power-sector project execution and management.

He subsequently served as Director (Technical) at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan and later joined THDC India Ltd. as Director (Technical) in June 2023.

At THDCIL, he was associated with the commissioning of Unit-1 of the 660 MW Khurja Super Thermal Power Project and Units 1 and 2 of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant, each with a capacity of 250 MW.

Focus on New-Age Energy Technologies

Gupta’s experience covers hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission and distribution, along with project planning, design, execution, contracts and operations.

His stated priorities for the power sector include meeting India’s growing electricity demand through non-fossil fuel sources while strengthening energy security. His focus areas also include artificial intelligence, EV-grid integration, cybersecurity, green hydrogen, bioenergy and energy storage.

The latest extension ensures continuity in SJVN’s top leadership while the process for appointing a regular CMD remains underway.
