Kochi: The Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held on March 12–13, 2025, in Kochi, Kerala, brought together policymakers, scientists, researchers, industry leaders, and clean energy experts to discuss the future of hydrogen and renewable energy technologies. During the summit, Dr. Ranjith Krishna Pai, Scientist F, Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, highlighted India’s growing role in the global hydrogen ecosystem and the importance of innovation-led collaboration in advancing clean energy solutions.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Pai spoke about India’s participation in global clean energy initiatives and the country’s efforts to accelerate the development and deployment of hydrogen technologies as part of its long-term sustainability and energy transition goals.

Mission Innovation Driving Global Collaboration

He highlighted the significance of Mission Innovation, a global initiative launched to accelerate clean energy technology development through international collaboration. The platform brings together governments, research institutions, industries, and innovators to address challenges related to climate change, decarbonisation, and sustainable energy systems.

According to Dr. Pai, collaborative research and technology partnerships are critical for accelerating the adoption of emerging clean energy solutions and creating pathways towards a low-carbon future.

Advancing Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies

The Department of Science & Technology has been actively supporting research and development in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, which are increasingly being recognised as important components of future energy systems.

Dr. Pai noted that ongoing initiatives are focused on improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing the commercial viability of hydrogen-based solutions. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence-driven research, advanced materials development, and automated experimentation platforms are also being leveraged to accelerate innovation in the sector.

Hydrogen Valleys Emerging as Innovation Hubs

A key focus of his address was the concept of Hydrogen Valleys, integrated ecosystems designed to demonstrate the complete hydrogen value chain—from production and storage to transportation and end-use applications.

These hydrogen valleys are envisioned as large-scale projects that combine infrastructure, research, industry participation, and real-world deployment within defined geographic regions. By integrating multiple sectors, including mobility, industry, and energy, they aim to showcase the practical potential of hydrogen technologies at scale.

Dr. Pai highlighted that several hydrogen valley initiatives are being developed across India, creating opportunities for innovation, investment, and technology demonstration.

Strengthening India’s Hydrogen Ecosystem

The scientist also highlighted ongoing technological advancements emerging from Indian research institutions and industry collaborations. Innovations in hydrogen purification, storage technologies, and green hydrogen production systems are contributing to the development of a robust domestic hydrogen ecosystem.

He noted that partnerships between research organisations, academia, startups, and industry players are helping accelerate the commercialisation of hydrogen technologies and supporting India’s ambition to become a major player in the global clean energy economy.

Building a Sustainable Energy Future

The summit discussions focused on strategies for scaling hydrogen adoption, strengthening renewable energy infrastructure, and creating innovation ecosystems capable of supporting long-term decarbonisation goals.

Participants explored opportunities around hydrogen production, storage, mobility applications, industrial use cases, and policy frameworks designed to accelerate clean energy deployment.

The event served as a platform for collaboration among government agencies, researchers, investors, startups, and industry leaders committed to advancing the hydrogen economy and renewable energy transition.

As India continues to expand its clean energy ambitions, experts at the summit emphasised that innovation, research, and strategic partnerships will be essential in driving the next phase of sustainable energy growth.
