India’s approach to artificial intelligence is increasingly centred on scale, inclusion, and real- world application. The proposed AI Commons will enable the reuse and adaptation of proven solutions, while an impact recognition framework is being considered to highlight applications that demonstrate tangible benefits across diverse populations and geographies. Kavita Bhatia, Chief Operating Officer, IndiaAI Mission, shares insights on this with Priyanka Dua & Abhineet Kumar of Elets News Network on the sidelines of the recently concluded UP AI & Health Innovation Conference in Lucknow.
You were part of this session. What would you say are the key takeaways from this working group?
The working group has clearly demonstrated how artificial intelligence can drive socio-economic growth. There are two major takeaways. First, we are working towards creating an AI Commons, which will serve as a repository of impactful AI solutions developed in India and across the world. This platform will allow users globally to build upon existing, proven applications rather than starting from scratch.
Second, there is a strong need to recognise and showcase the real-world impact of AI solutions. At present, there are limited platforms that formally acknowledge such an impact.

India is also organising its first AI Summit. How will it be different from global AI summits held so far?
This summit is part of a global series. The first was hosted by the UK in 2023, followed by Seoul in 2024, which focused largely on AI safety and innovation. The third summit, held in France in February 2025 and co-chaired by India, focused on action—what needs to be done with AI.
India’s summit builds on all these aspects—safety, security, innovation, and action—but adds a crucial dimension. Our focus is on demonstrating how AI has delivered impact at scale, particularly for a country with a large and diverse population. If AI solutions work effectively in India, they can be adapted by many other countries.
The central theme of India’s summit is how AI can impact people, planet, and progress. Each working group is aligned to these pillars, and its outcome documents will contribute to the final Ministerial Declaration. This will present India’s perspective on impactful and inclusive AI to the world.
How many countries are expected to participate in the India AI Impact Summit?
This is a difficult question to answer precisely because global interest is very high. At present, we have received confirmations from over 100 countries. Delegations from around 8 to 10 countries will be led by Heads of State or Heads of Government.
In addition, we have confirmations from more than 60 CEOs of large global companies and around 120 senior leaders at the CTO and CXO level. Overall, participation is expected to exceed 100 countries.
There are concerns that AI will dominate and disrupt the job market. Do you share that view?
I don’t entirely agree with that concern. Similar fears existed during the Internet boom, when people believed computers would lead to massive job losses. That did not happen.

With AI, some roles may become redundant, but many new opportunities will also be created. AI is fundamentally a productivity-enhancing tool. Individuals who learn to use AI effectively will be able to deliver more in less time and showcase their capabilities better. Rather than eliminating jobs, AI will reshape the job market and create new roles, much like previous technological revolutions.
Elets is organising a pre-summit event. Do you have a message for them?
Pre-summit events are extremely important as they set the foundation for the main summit. My key recommendation is to focus on developing strong outcome documents, as these will feed directly into the Ministerial Declaration.
We are closely monitoring all pre-summit discussions and their outputs. Every theme discussed—including those at the Elets pre- summit—will contribute to shaping the final declaration. I wish the team all the best and look forward to the outcomes.
