Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has appointed Asit Gopal as a Part-time Official (Government Nominee) Director on its Board, with effect from February 3, the company said in a statement.
The appointment follows a communication received from the Ministry of Heavy Industry on February 2 and subsequent approval by the BHEL Board. Gopal is currently serving as Special Secretary and Financial Adviser (SS&FA) in the ministry.
According to the company, Asit Gopal brings over three decades of experience in government service, spanning public administration, finance, vigilance, tribal affairs, education, sanitation and forest management. His appointment adds senior-level administrative and financial expertise to the BHEL Board.
An alumnus of IIT Bombay, Gopal holds a B.Tech in Civil Engineering and has pursued postgraduate studies in Wildlife Management, Public Policy and Management, in addition to an MBA.
During his career, he has held several key positions, including Additional Secretary (Finance), Director in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Central Vigilance Commission, and Mission Director of the Swachh Bharat Mission in Madhya Pradesh. He has also served as Chairman and Managing Director of the National Scheduled Tribe Finance and Development Corporation.
Gopal earlier worked as Commissioner of the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), where he was responsible for overseeing the implementation of Eklavya Model Residential Schools across the country.
With this appointment, BHEL is expected to benefit from Gopal’s wide-ranging experience in governance, finance and public-sector administration as the company continues to focus on operational efficiency and strategic initiatives.
