The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, has cleared a major boost for Pune’s urban mobility by approving Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. This marks the second major approval under Phase-2, following the sanction of Line 2A (Vanaz–Chandani Chowk) and Line 2B (Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi).
Spanning a combined 31.636 km and featuring 28 elevated stations, Lines 4 and 4A will strengthen connectivity across East, South, and West Pune, linking IT corridors, commercial hubs, educational centres, and rapidly growing residential zones. The project, estimated at ₹9,857.85 crore, will be executed over five years with joint funding from the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral and multilateral agencies.
The corridors form a strategic component of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan, offering seamless integration with existing and upcoming metro lines at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2), and Swargate (Line 1). An interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and onward connectivity to future routes toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road will further strengthen multimodal access among metro, rail, and bus networks.
From the technology hub of Kharadi IT Park to the tourist belt of Khadakwasla, and from Hadapsar’s industrial cluster to Warje’s residential neighbourhoods, the two new lines will unify diverse urban pockets. Traversing some of Pune’s busiest stretches—Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway—the expansion is expected to ease congestion, enhance commuter safety, and promote sustainable, eco-friendly mobility.
Ridership projections underline the long-term significance of the project. Combined daily passenger numbers for Line 4 and 4A are anticipated to reach 4.09 lakh in 2028, increasing to nearly 7 lakh by 2038, 9.63 lakh by 2048, and more than 11.7 lakh by 2058. The Kharadi–Khadakwasla main corridor alone is expected to serve 3.23 lakh commuters in 2028, rising steadily to 9.33 lakh by 2058. The Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug segment is projected to grow from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh commuters over the same period.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will implement the project, overseeing all civil, electrical, mechanical, and system-level works. Pre-construction activities—including topographical surveys and detailed design consultations—are already in progress.
The approval pushes Pune Metro’s footprint beyond the 100-km mark, marking a milestone in the city’s transition toward an integrated, modern transit ecosystem. With Line 4 and 4A, Pune is poised to gain not just new infrastructure but a faster, greener, and more connected urban future. The expansion promises to save commuting hours, reduce congestion, and provide citizens with a safer, more reliable, and affordable mobility option—positioning these corridors as future lifelines that will shape Pune’s growth trajectory for decades to come.
