The UK government has announced a record GBP 3 billion (USD 4 billion) investment in skills training for local workers, in a landmark move to reduce reliance on foreign labour and plug persistent workforce gaps. The initiative, led by the UK Department for Education, will create 1,20,000 new training positions across critical sectors including construction, engineering, health and social care, and digital technologies.
The investment is part of a sweeping plan to realign the nation’s workforce with domestic capabilities and ease pressure on the country’s immigration system. More than 21.4% of working-age Britons remain outside the labour force, a trend that has accelerated since the Covid-19 pandemic and poses significant challenges to economic recovery.

The announcement comes amid heightened political pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government to tighten immigration rules, particularly after the right-wing Reform UK party made significant gains in local elections. In response, the government is introducing a suite of reforms, including raising the immigration skills charge by 32%, restricting skilled worker visas to graduate-level roles, and reforming the citizenship pathway.

This increase in the skills charge is projected to fund up to 45,000 additional training slots in high-demand sectors, further bolstering the drive to harness and empower domestic talent.
