In a landmark initiative aimed at modernising India’s railway infrastructure, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate 103 redeveloped railway stations across 86 districts in 18 States and Union Territories on 22 May 2025. Among these, five upgraded stations in Karnataka—Munirabad, Bagalkot, Gadag, Gokak Road, and Dharwad—are set to be unveiled during a grand event in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
These stations have been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), an ambitious project of the Ministry of Railways under the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ campaign. The scheme envisions the transformation of over 1,300 railway stations with a budget exceeding ₹1,100 crore, blending state-of-the-art infrastructure with regional architectural identity and improved passenger facilities.

Karnataka’s Leap Towards World-Class Rail Infrastructure
The state of Karnataka is prominently featured in this nationwide redevelopment drive. The five stations in focus have undergone comprehensive modernisation, enhancing not only the commuter experience but also regional connectivity, tourism, and economic development.

Gadag Railway Station has been redeveloped at a cost of ₹23.24 crore. The upgraded station now features a modern façade, a spacious circulating area, and segregated entry and exit points. Key enhancements include a 12-meter-wide foot overbridge, functional lifts and escalators, Divyangjan-friendly amenities, and upgraded platforms with better shelters, signage, and sanitation facilities. Gadag’s strategic position as a junction connecting Hubballi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad makes this redevelopment particularly impactful.

Dharwad Railway Station, located on the crucial Londa–Hubballi line, now boasts a modernised layout following an investment of ₹17.1 crore. The station features a new entry, a wide foot overbridge, lifts, escalators, and upgraded digital systems. Improved accessibility, signage, and expanded parking and passenger amenities position Dharwad as a key transport hub in northern Karnataka.

Bagalkot Railway Station has been modernised at a cost of ₹16.06 crore. Located on the Gadag–Hotgi rail line, the station serves as a vital link to cities such as Hubballi, Vijayapura, and Bengaluru. Redevelopment highlights include a new station building, dedicated parking, separate waiting rooms for men and women, and advanced digital systems to enhance passenger convenience.
Munirabad Railway Station, located in Koppal district near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, has seen a transformation with an investment of ₹18.40 crore. Its redevelopment includes a new building, modern circulating area, platform shelters, lifts, and state-of-the-art information systems. This enhancement is poised to benefit both local commuters and international tourists visiting historic sites like the Virupaksha Temple and Tungabhadra Dam.
Gokak Road Railway Station in Belagavi district has also been revamped under ABSS at a cost of ₹16.98 crore. With a new G+1 station building, a wide foot overbridge, improved parking facilities, and modern digital systems, the station is expected to significantly enhance passenger movement and support local economic growth.
