
The Centre will consider proposals for Bangalore Metro Phase-2 revised cost estimates and Phase-3A expansion after they receive approval from the Karnataka State Cabinet, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, and Power, Shri Manohar Lal announced during a high-level urban review meeting held in Bengaluru today.
The meeting witnessed participation from key Karnataka ministers including Byrathi Suresh (Urban Development and Town Planning), Rahim Khan (Municipal Administration), B Z Zameer Ahmad Khan (Housing), K J George (Energy), along with Additional Chief Secretary Tushar Giri and senior officials from both the state government and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The Union Minister expressed satisfaction with the ongoing progress of various urban development missions. He confirmed that the revised cost estimate for Phase 2 of the Bangalore Metro would be taken up for Central Government approval once Karnataka’s cabinet clears it. Regarding Phase-3A, the Minister stated that a 37 km extension proposal costing approximately ₹28,400 crore has been submitted by the state and is currently under expert evaluation. The Centre has already sanctioned 45 km of Phase-3 works worth ₹15,600 crore earlier this year. Currently, 75 km of metro lines are operational, while 145 km are under construction in Bengaluru.

Highlighting the importance of sustainability and urban modernisation, the Union Minister urged the Karnataka government to address legacy waste issues on a priority basis. He also stressed the urgent need to promote the reuse of treated wastewater, positioning it as a critical strategy for urban sustainability and freshwater conservation.

Additionally, he advocated for permitting higher Floor Area Ratio (FAR) along mass transit corridors to encourage urban densification, reduce traffic congestion, and boost public transport usage.
In discussions on funding, the Minister encouraged the state to undertake necessary urban reforms to become eligible for the 50-year interest-free loans under the Centre’s ‘Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SSASCI) 2025-26’.
