Renewable Energy Expansion

India added 25 GW of renewable energy capacity in FY 2024–25, marking the highest ever annual increase, taking the cumulative installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources to 222.86 GW as of February 28, 2025, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The total installed power generation capacity in the country stood at 483.26 GW as of March 31, 2025. The ministry stated, “This is the highest increase in any year. Previously, the highest increase was 18.56 GW during 2023–24.”

Out of the 222.86 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, solar power contributed 102.57 GW, followed by 48.59 GW from wind power, 52.07 GW from hydro, 11.45 GW from bio-power, and 8.18 GW from nuclear power. Solar energy witnessed a 20.76 GW capacity addition in FY25, increasing from 81.81 GW in March 2024 to 102.57 GW in February 2025. “This is the highest increase in solar capacity in any year,” the ministry noted. Wind power grew from 45.89 GW to 48.59 GW in the same period, while India’s solar module manufacturing capacity, listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), nearly doubled from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74 GW by March 2025. The solar PV cell manufacturing capacity also tripled, rising from around 9 GW to 25 GW in FY25. India’s first ingot-wafer manufacturing facility of around 2 GW started production in the same financial year.

Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies (SECI, NTPC, NHPC, and SJVN) issued RE power procurement tenders aggregating 44 GW in FY25. India’s solar power sector has seen a 3537% increase in capacity over the past decade, up from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 102.57 GW in February 2025. Solar now accounts for 47.78% of the total installed renewable energy capacity.
