PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, India’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, has surpassed the milestone of one million installations, marking significant progress in the country’s renewable energy sector. As announced by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, this achievement underscores the government’s commitment to expanding solar energy adoption across households.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme in February 2024. The scheme aims to provide solar power to one crore households by March 2027. With a budgetary allocation of Rs 75,021 crore, the initiative facilitates the installation of rooftop solar panels, ensuring free electricity for beneficiaries. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is responsible for implementing the scheme.

According to official data from MNRE, as of March 10, 2025, a total of 10.09 lakh rooftop solar installations have been completed across the country. The scheme has witnessed strong participation, with 47.3 lakh applications submitted by interested households. Furthermore, 6.13 lakh beneficiaries have successfully received subsidies, amounting to Rs 4,770 crore, supporting the affordability and accessibility of solar energy solutions.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is also contributing to the expansion of India’s solar energy capacity, with over 3 GW of rooftop solar power already installed under the program. This initiative is playing a crucial role in promoting domestic manufacturing, particularly in the production of inverters and Balance of Plant (BoP) components, strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Highlighting the scheme’s impact, Minister Pralhad Joshi stated in a post on X, “India achieves a historic milestone in solar energy! Under the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi ji, the @PMSuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana has empowered 10 lakh homes with solar energy, driving a new era of sustainability, affordability, and self-reliance.”

To accelerate progress, the government has set an ambitious target to solarise 20 lakh households by October 2025. Distribution companies (DISCOMs) have been designated as State Implementation Agencies (SIAs) under the scheme. Their responsibilities include ensuring the availability of net meters, conducting timely inspections, and overseeing the commissioning of rooftop solar installations. This framework is designed to streamline the implementation process and enhance efficiency in service delivery.

A key component of the scheme is the financial incentive for DISCOMs, which has been allocated a total outlay of Rs 4,950 crore. This funding also subsumes the previous Grid Connected Roof Top Solar (GCRT) Phase II program, aligning efforts to enhance India’s renewable energy landscape.
