India and Argentina have taken a major step in strengthening their partnership in the mining sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on lithium exploration and resource development. Union Minister for Coal and Mines, along with the Secretary, Ministry of Mines, and senior officials, met with Argentina’s Governor of Catamarca in New Delhi to discuss expanding cooperation in critical minerals.
The MoU, signed between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a PSU under the Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, marks a crucial milestone in India’s efforts to secure lithium, a key component for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage.
Argentina, part of the renowned ‘Lithium Triangle,’ holds vast lithium reserves, making it a strategic partner for India. Discussions covered ongoing lithium exploration initiatives by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) and Greenko in Catamarca, with a focus on expanding Indian investments in Argentina’s mining projects. Both sides explored opportunities for long-term supply agreements, joint ventures, and enhanced participation of Indian companies in Argentina’s critical minerals sector.

Senior officials also deliberated on policy frameworks, regulatory collaboration, and sustainable mining practices to ensure a mutually beneficial and environmentally responsible partnership. Knowledge exchange and infrastructure support were key areas of focus to deepen India’s engagement in Argentina’s mining landscape.

With this MoU, India and Argentina have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their cooperation in critical minerals, paving the way for accelerated lithium exploration and enhanced resource security for India’s growing clean energy and EV sectors.
