The Gujarat government has appointed Pankaj Joshi as the state’s next Chief Secretary. This announcement follows the upcoming retirement of the current Chief Secretary, Raj Kumar, whose tenure ends on January 31, 2025. The General Administration Department issued an official notification confirming the appointment.
A 1989-batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Joshi is currently serving as the Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), a position he has held since September 15, 2021. Over his extensive career, Joshi has held numerous significant roles, including Municipal Commissioner, Secretary, and Principal Secretary.

Born on October 19, 1965, in Nainital, Uttarakhand, Joshi is a distinguished academic with a B.Tech in Civil Engineering and an M.Tech in Water Resource Engineering from IIT Delhi, as well as an M.Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies. He began his journey as an IAS officer on August 21, 1989. If not extended, his tenure as Chief Secretary will conclude with his retirement in October 2025.

Joshi is the second senior-most IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre after Raj Kumar. Following him in seniority are officers Srinivas Katikithala, Sunaina Tomar, Kamal Dayani, and Manoj Kumar Das. Speculation suggests that Manoj Kumar Das might succeed Joshi, either later this year or next year, depending on an extension of Joshi’s tenure.

Over the years, Joshi has made significant contributions to Gujarat’s administrative framework, including stints as collector and commissioner in Surat, Gujarat. His appointment as Chief Secretary further cements his role in shaping the state’s governance and policies.
