Tourism Ministry Approves ₹3,295.76 Crore for 23 States’ Lesser-Known Destinations

To enhance tourism and foster balanced regional development, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has approved 40 projects totalling ₹3,295.76 crores for the development of lesser-known tourism destinations across 23 states. This initiative, designed to alleviate pressure on popular tourist destinations, aims to increase the appeal of underexplored locations while promoting sustainability and cultural preservation.

Strategic Focus on Tourism Growth

The initiative, under the Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) Scheme, aligns with the Ministry’s goal to create iconic tourist centres on a global scale. The projects involve long-term, interest-free loans to states for 50 years, fostering significant capital investments to enhance public infrastructure, boost local economies, and create employment opportunities. States are expected to complete these projects within two years.

The government’s investment in these projects aims to act as a catalyst for economic growth, attracting private sector participation to further enhance infrastructure and local amenities. A strong emphasis is being placed on community-based tourism to empower local populations while preserving cultural heritage. Sustainable practices and advanced technologies will also be integrated into these projects to ensure long-term viability and innovation in tourism management.

Key Approved Projects

Among the highlights of the approved projects are:

  • Andhra Pradesh: Enrichment of Gandikota Fort and Gorge (₹77.91 crore), and development of Akhanda Godavari (₹94.44 crore).
  • Assam: Beautification of Rang Ghar in Sivasagar (₹94.76 crore) and Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden (₹97.12 crore).
  • Karnataka: Establishment of an Ecotourism and Cultural Hub at Roerich and Devika Rani Estate in Bengaluru (₹99.17 crore).
  • Maharashtra: Ex-INS Guldar Underwater Museum in Sindhudurg (₹46.91 crore) and Ram-Kal Path in Nashik (₹99.14 crore).
  • Rajasthan: Development of Amber-Nahargarh area (₹49.31 crore) and Jal Mahal in Jaipur (₹96.61 crore).

Additionally, the projects span diverse themes, including eco-tourism, heritage preservation, wellness retreats, adventure tourism, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) infrastructure.

A Roadmap for Sustainable Tourism

By focusing on untapped tourism potential, the Ministry aims to achieve a balanced distribution of tourists and reduce environmental pressures on over-visited destinations. The projects will incorporate sustainable tourism practices, helping safeguard natural and cultural resources while offering enriched experiences to visitors.

The Ministry is also encouraging state governments to adopt advanced technologies to streamline operations, optimize tourist flows, and enhance the overall experience. Initiatives such as eco-tourism hubs, cultural landmarks, and adventure parks are expected to attract both domestic and international travellers, propelling India’s tourism sector to new heights.
