Why MSMEs Are the Backbone of India’s Economy
MSMEs have consistently been a cornerstone of India’s GDP, demonstrating remarkable resilience even amidst global adversities. The sector’s Gross Value Added (GVA) to India’s GDP increased from 29.7% in 2017-18 to 30.1% in 2022-23. During the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, while many sectors faltered, MSMEs maintained a significant contribution of 27.3% in 2020-21 and swiftly rebounded to 29.6% in 2021-22. This steadfast performance is a clear indicator of the sector’s vitality and its ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
From Micro to Medium Enterprises
The sector’s growth is further evident in the scaling up of enterprises. The Revised Classification of MSMEs, effective from July 1, 2020, categorized enterprises as Micro, Small, or Medium based on investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover. This revision spurred a transformation, enabling businesses to scale up and embrace new opportunities. Between 2020-21 and 2024-25, an impressive number of enterprises transitioned to the medium category, with 2,372 micro-enterprises and 17,745 small enterprises upgrading to medium enterprises in 2023-24 alone. This evolution highlights the dynamism and scalability of the MSME ecosystem.
