Ministry of Defence

On November 30, 2024, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) entered into a landmark agreement with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Short Refit and Dry Docking (SRDD) of the INS Vikramaditya, the flagship aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. The contract, valued at ₹1207.5 crore, represents a critical step in the ongoing modernization and strengthening of India’s naval fleet. This significant development underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its maritime defence capabilities in a rapidly evolving geopolitical environment. The refit of such a crucial asset also aligns with the Indian Navy’s goal of maintaining a state-of-the-art, high-readiness fleet. With increasing maritime security challenges, this upgrade ensures the aircraft carrier remains capable of safeguarding India’s strategic interests.

INS Vikramaditya, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy in November 2013, is one of the most formidable assets in the fleet, playing a pivotal role in maintaining naval superiority in the Indian Ocean Region. As part of the refitting process, the ship will undergo a comprehensive overhaul, which will include the upgrade of its combat systems, operational equipment, and support mechanisms. The refitting will enhance the aircraft carrier’s overall combat capabilities and improve its operational efficiency, ensuring it remains a vital force multiplier for the Indian Navy. Upon completion of the SRDD, INS Vikramaditya is expected to return to active service, equipped with cutting-edge technology that will significantly bolster the Indian Navy’s operational readiness and ability to respond to emerging challenges.

The strategic importance of this project extends beyond the operational enhancements to the INS Vikramaditya. This contract also serves to further establish Cochin Shipyard Limited as a key player in the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector. CSL’s involvement in this high-profile refit project not only highlights the shipyard’s technical prowess but also positions it as a hub for naval fleet maintenance in India. The project is expected to boost the Indian industrial ecosystem by creating new opportunities for nearly 50 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), contributing to the growth of the local economy. Additionally, over 3,500 skilled personnel will be employed during the project, providing a substantial boost to employment in the region.

In alignment with the Government of India’s broader strategic objectives, the SRDD contract reflects the nation’s focus on self-reliance in defence capabilities. The initiative supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India campaigns by advancing domestic technological capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. As the refit progresses, it will play a crucial role in advancing India’s defence self-sufficiency, furthering the country’s long-term goals of strengthening its maritime defence posture and contributing to regional stability.
