India has secured a prominent position among the world’s top 10 nations for patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, as revealed in the World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024 report published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The report showcases India’s rapid advancements in intellectual property (IP) filings, emphasising significant growth across all major categories.

The WIPI 2024 report highlights India’s record-setting performance in patent applications, which saw a 15.7 per cent increase in 2023, the fastest growth among the top 20 countries. This marks the fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth in patents. India now ranks sixth globally with 64,480 patent applications, with resident filings making up 55.2 per cent—a first for the nation. The patent office’s efforts also led to a striking 149.4 per cent surge in patents granted compared to 2022, demonstrating a robust and evolving IP ecosystem.

India’s industrial design applications experienced a 36.4 per cent increase, reflecting the country’s focus on manufacturing and creative industries. The top three sectors for design filings—Textiles and Accessories, Tools and Machines, and Health and Cosmetics—accounted for nearly half of all submissions. Furthermore, the country ranked fourth globally in trademark filings, with a 6.1 per cent rise in 2023. The Health, Agriculture, and Clothing sectors led trademark registrations, with almost 90 per cent of applications filed by residents.

India’s trademark office has become a global powerhouse, holding the second-largest number of active registrations, with over 3.2 million trademarks in force. Overall, the WIPI report underscores India’s expanding influence and leadership in the global intellectual property landscape.
