As the world continues to face the growing challenges of climate change, the need for innovative, sustainable solutions has never been more crucial. India, with its large population and growing economy, is at an important juncture regarding its role in addressing climate change. The country must simultaneously reduce its environmental impact and sustain economic growth. However, India is also rapidly paving the way to become a leader in green innovations, integrating sustainable technologies to propel future green development.

The Rise of Green Technologies


Green technologies are promoting sustainable development across various industries, including agriculture, transportation, and energy. India’s ambitious goal to cut its carbon intensity by 45 per cent1 by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2070 has prompted a wave of green innovations in sectors like sustainable agriculture and renewable energy. The country’s green technology market is expected to grow significantly, supported by government regulations like the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and initiatives like Make in India, which encourage technological advancements in sustainability.

Key Trends in India’s Green Innovations


  1. Renewable Energy Revolution: India ranks third globally in renewable energy production and aims to reach 500 GW of capacity by 20302. Solar energy is experiencing exponential growth, with initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), which promote the use of solar power in agriculture. The country’s renewable energy capacity has surpassed 100 GW, and government efforts to build rooftop solar farms and solar parks have lowered the cost of solar energy, making it competitive with conventional fossil fuels. Wind energy is also expanding, particularly in states like Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, where India’s wind potential is being harnessed.
  2. Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Sustainable Mobility: With the support of government initiatives like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining momentum. The government has set a target of 30% EV3 penetration by 2030, which is expected to significantly reduce emissions. Many renowned startups, alongside established players, are leading the way by creating affordable, energy-efficient electric two-wheelers and cars. Battery-swapping technologies and advances in charging infrastructure are also accelerating EV adoption in urban areas.
  3. Green Buildings and Smart Cities: As urbanization continues, India’s cities are expanding at an unprecedented rate. To manage this growth sustainably, India is embracing green building practices. The country’s Smart Cities Mission, targeting 100 cities, incorporates green building standards, renewable energy integration, and sustainable waste management. According to the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs4, over 8,000 projects are underway in 100 cities, with more than 90% of these projects under the Smart Cities Mission already completed.
  4. Agricultural Sustainability through Technology: Agriculture, a crucial sector of the Indian economy, is also experiencing green innovation. The integration of AI, IoT, and precision farming techniques is transforming how farmers manage water, soil, and crop health. For example, the ‘Saagu Baagu’ project in Telangana has improved chilli yields by 21% and reduced pesticide use by 9% through AI-driven initiatives (as per the World Economic Forum)5. The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), a government initiative, has further accelerated the adoption of efficient irrigation methods and promoted water conservation across India.
  5. Government Policies Driving Green Innovation: The Indian government has implemented several initiatives to promote sustainability and has played a significant role in facilitating green innovations. Key programs include:
  • National Solar Mission: Aiming for 100 GW of solar energy by 2022.
  • National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP): Encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles.
  • Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT): Promoting compressed biogas (CBG).

The Road Ahead: A Green and Sustainable Future for India

Despite challenges like funding and scaling these technologies, the country’s commitment to sustainability is undeniable. With government support, an entrepreneurial mindset, and technological breakthroughs, India is well-positioned to lead the world in green innovation.
