Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has urged for intensified efforts to solarise households and offices across the state to achieve energy self-sufficiency. During a review meeting with senior officials from the energy department, he evaluated the progress of the PM Surya Ghar and PM Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) schemes.
Emphasising the state’s favourable climate for solar energy, Naidu underscored the importance of educating citizens about the advantages of adopting solar power. Officials presented ambitious targets under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, aiming to solarise 30 lakh households with a subsidy of ₹78,000 per 3-kilowatt solar system, which costs ₹1.45 lakh to install. So far, the initiative has received over 70,000 applications, and solar panels have been installed on 4,961 rooftops across the state.
In a transformative step, Andhra Pradesh plans to convert 132 villages into “solar villages,” where each household generates its own electricity. The Kuppam constituency has been identified for a pilot project of complete solarisation, with 50,312 households already agreeing to make the switch.

The Chief Minister directed officials to enhance awareness about central schemes like PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM, particularly among vulnerable communities, including Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). However, officials reported challenges in implementing solar panel installations for SC and ST households, with only 19% of these homes deemed suitable.

The state government also aims to install solar panels in all government offices, with a project budget of ₹262 crore. Covering 2,186 offices, this initiative is projected to save the state ₹379 crore annually in electricity expenses. The project will be executed by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN), with the government ensuring its timely completion.
With these initiatives, Andhra Pradesh is poised to become a model for solar energy adoption, fostering sustainability and reducing dependency on conventional power sources.
