Kochi Metro

In a significant development, the Kerala Government has given the green light for the allocation of Rs 378.57 crore to finance the second phase of the Kochi Metro Rail Project. This funding is earmarked to support the construction of a new 11.8-kilometer stretch, known as the Pink Line, which will run from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad via Info Park, according to a statement by state Finance Minister K N Balagopal.

The Phase II project of the Kochi Metro, which includes the addition of an 11.2-kilometer Pink Line featuring 11 stations, received approval from the Kerala Government back in July 2018, with an estimated budget of Rs 2,310 crore. This phase also encompasses the construction of a spur line connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark II in Kakkanad.

The detailed project report (DPR) for Phase II was sanctioned by the Union Cabinet in September 2022, with a projected cost of Rs 1,957.05 crore. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), a joint venture equally shared by the Central and State governments, is overseeing the Phase II project, which is expected to be completed and operational by the year 2028.
