In a recent development, Sunil Kumar Gupta, a senior IAS officer from the 1987 batch of the West Bengal cadre, has been granted re-employment as the Secretary to the Honorable Vice President of India, Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar. Mr. Gupta, who was originally slated to retire on December 31, 2023, has had his tenure extended.

Under the new arrangement, Mr. Gupta has been appointed to this role on a contract basis, effective from January 1, 2024. He will hold the rank and receive the pay of a Secretary to the Government of India, with his tenure aligned with that of the Honorable Vice President of India.
Prior to this re-employment, Mr. Gupta had initially assumed the position of Secretary to the Vice President of India on August 17, 2022, while still serving in his home cadre of West Bengal. Notably, he has been working alongside Mr. Dhankhar since the latter’s tenure as the Governor of West Bengal.
Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar assumed office as the 14th and current Vice President of India on August 11, 2022, leading to Mr. Gupta’s transfer from West Bengal to the central government, following orders from the Union government.
