Rural livelihood

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in using technology to improve the lives of people living in rural areas. One area where technology has shown particular promise is in the creation of startups and eCommerce platforms that can help augment rural livelihoods. By providing new opportunities for entrepreneurs and connecting them with a broader market, these startups and eCommerce platforms have the potential to transform rural communities and improve their economic well-being. E-commerce platforms operating in rural India offer fresh opportunities for small retailers and industries to expand their businesses by enabling them to showcase their products online.

The dominant influence of rural India on the Country’s economy

Given that a significant proportion of the population in India resides in rural areas, the rural population wields a dominant influence over the country’s economy. Looking ahead, it is evident that the growth of e-commerce in rural regions is vital in the current context of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Projections indicate that by 2034, the e-commerce market in India will outstrip the United States to become the world’s secondlargest market. The eCommerce market is forecasted to generate revenue of US$71.29bn in 2023, with an annual growth rate (CAGR 2023-2027) of 13.90% projected to result in a market volume of US$120.00bn by 2027. Moreover, the industry recorded a staggering 77% surge in 2021 compared to the previous year.

Looking forward, it can be argued that the rural Indian market represents an untapped potential that many e-commerce companies are eager to explore. The availability of internet services in rural areas has enabled consumers to shop for the things they desire at their convenience, creating a significant opportunity for rural customers to improve their lifestyles and for e-commerce companies to expand their customer base by meeting the demands of people residing in rural areas of India.

eCommerce platforms cater to the needs of rural India: Opportunities and challenges

The government’s Digital India initiative has laid the foundation for future technological advancements, which could lead to a boost in global GDP by $1.2 trillion to $2 trillion by 2030 through faster connectivity in retail. The introduction of Live eCommerce could be a game-changer for India’s e-commerce industry by digitizing every aspect of the product and consumer journey. With the advent of 5G, a future-ready eCommerce industry could soon become a reality.

eCommerce enterprises that are resilient, easily accessible, and cater to the demands of the rural Indian market will prosper. The needs of rural customers are diverse, and factors such as post-sale services, affordability, and user-friendly technology play a crucial role. Since not all households have the technical know-how, designing technology that is easy to use is essential. Both B2C and B2B businesses have the potential to succeed in rural India, and the Kirana model could be beneficial for first-mile pickup and last-mile delivery, as local distribution centers allow logistical providers to operate in non-urban areas.

Local stores such as Kirana shops can function as Pick Up Drop Off (PUDO) sites, allowing retailers to serve within a few kilometres using this model. The government-led ONDC(Open Networking for Digital Commerce) is a step towards democratizing digital commerce for small vendors in tier-2, and tier-3 cities and villages. ONDC works to bring together activities such as cataloguing inventory management, order management, and fulfilment within a framework similar to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

India is creating a conducive ecosystem to support the trust established by e-commerce platforms. Today, India has an industry with immense potential to lead the next wave of economic growth and create new jobs. A well-established eCommerce market will provide opportunities for rural communities, empowering them with a sense of

entitlement and sustained economic engagement. This will generate employment, promote industry growth in rural India, and enable rural sellers to conduct larger and more active businesses.

The variety of products offered in brick-and-mortar shops in India’s smaller cities and towns is relatively limited. eCommerce platforms cater to this demand by providing access to a broad range of brands and information about these companies in the form of product ratings and reviews. This provides customers with greater value in terms of functionality, aesthetics, and patterns, encouraging more people to shop online.

India has built a more robust eCommerce ecosystem and has progressed in operating eCommerce by establishing a robust framework concerning omnichannel retailing, marketing, warehousing, payment solutions, and retail exports, among others. This will enable the country to realize its true potential as one of the top e-commerce destinations in the world.

Startups and eCommerce platforms offering alternative sources of capital for rural businesses

One of the primary ways that startups and eCommerce platforms can help rural communities is by providing access to markets that were previously out of reach. In the past, rural entrepreneurs often struggled to find customers for their products because they lacked the means to connect with buyers outside of their immediate area. With the advent of eCommerce platforms, however, it is now possible for anyone with an internet connection to sell their products to customers around the world. This has opened up a world of new opportunities for rural entrepreneurs, who can now reach a much larger customer base than ever before.

Another way that startups and eCommerce platforms can help rural communities is by providing access to capital. In many rural areas, there are few options for obtaining the funding necessary to start a new business. Banks and other financial institutions are often reluctant to lend money to rural entrepreneurs, who may lack the collateral or credit history necessary to secure a loan. Startups and eCommerce platforms, however, can provide an alternative source of funding through crowdfunding or other forms of investment. This can make it easier for rural entrepreneurs to get their businesses off the ground and create new jobs in their communities.

In addition to providing access to markets and capital, startups and eCommerce platforms can also help rural communities by promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. By encouraging people to think creatively and come up with new ideas for businesses, these platforms can foster a culture of innovation that can help to drive economic growth in rural areas. This can lead to the creation of new industries and the development of new products and services that can benefit rural communities and improve their quality of life.

Of course, there are also challenges associated with using startups and eCommerce platforms to augment rural livelihoods. For one thing, not everyone in rural areas has access to the internet or the skills necessary to use these platforms effectively. There may also be logistical challenges associated with shipping products to customers in other parts of the country or the world. However, these challenges can be overcome with the right investment and support from governments, NGOs, and other organizations that are committed to promoting economic development in rural areas.

In conclusion, startups and eCommerce platforms have the potential to play a crucial role in augmenting rural livelihoods. By providing access to markets, capital, and opportunities for innovation, these platforms can help to transform rural communities and improve the economic well-being of people living in these areas. While there are certainly challenges associated with using these platforms in rural areas, the benefits are clear, and we should all work together to ensure that rural entrepreneurs have the tools and resources they need to succeed.
