The Puducherry government plans to introduce e-governance in a phased manner to ensure transparent and citizens friendly administration.

PWD and Information and Technology Minister M O H F Shahjahan said that the facility would be set up at a cost of INR 70 crore.

He said the Central government had agreed to fund the data centre and also the Puducherry State Wide Area Network (PSWAN). The execution of the project had been entrusted to the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

The departments would have their own hardware and software facilities for two way communication with the Data Centre.

Citizens centres would be set up in 50 places in Puducherry from where people can draw certificates or documents they needed. The centres would meet their requirements all under one roof, he said.

He hoped that this facility would go on stream within a year. Backend computers at the end of each department would be set up by the territorial administration with priority for Civil Supplies and Treasuries.

“We are accustomed to long tradition of paper based governance. E- governance is innovative system and saves people from the tedium of running from pillar to post to get certificates,” he added.
