Gurgaon and Faridabad all set to become Green Cities. Gurgaon and Faridabad in Haryana have been selected for development as solar/green cities under a scheme of the Union Ministry for New and Renewable Energy. In Principle approval has already been received for Gurgaon, it would be received soon for Faridabad as well.

The project aims at a minimum 10 per cent reduction in projected demand for conventional energy at the end of five years, which could be achieved through a combination of energy efficiency measures and enhancing supply from renewable energy sources.

This 'Development of Solar Cities' programme was developed during the 11th Plan period to enable/empower urban local governments to address energy challenges at the city level. A total of 60 cities with population ranging from 5 lakh to 50 lakh are proposed to be supported for development as solar/green cities of which approval in principle for 15 cities, including Gurgaon, has come. The Ministry would also provide financial help of INR 50 lakh per city.
