Strengthen NREGA Through Collaboration

In order to strengthen the implementation of NREGA, Union Minister of Rural Development, Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh stressed upon the need for promoting collaboration with the Social Research institutions. For changing the face of rural India he urged participants to accord highest priority to National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). This he said while inaugurating a Roundtable with the Social Science Research Institutes.

Dr. Singh further elaborating on NREGA said that this Act initially launched in 200 districts, was extended to 130 more districts and then in the current year is being implemented in the remaining districts from April, 2008 onwards. He further added, 100 crore persondays have been generated under the Act.

Updating on the Financial Inclusion Dr. Singh mentioned 4 crore 70 lakh bank/post office accounts have been opened giving the poor an identity of their own. Also, the inclusion of the NREGA workers under the rural poor category of Janashree Bima Yojana, will increase social security of workers. Efforts are on for health insurance under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana with NREGA.
