Kerala (India) Govt. unveils new IT Policy

The Union Cabinet of India has approved the IT Policy of the Kerala Government. The new IT policy aims to turn Kerala into “a knowledge society with sustainable economic growth, social harmony and high quality of life for all.

The state government will encourage appropriate use of Free Software in all its ICT initiatives. According to the policy, free software presents a unique opportunity for building a truly egalitarian knowledge society. Under the new policy it has been envisaged that Kerala will become the headquarter of free-software industry in the coming days. The policy also stated that all major offices in the state and educational institutions would be networked. The local language Malayalam would be used extensively in the computerisation process and would be included to ensure the upliftment of all sections of society through IT. The policy aims at ensuring that the benefits of IT reach the common man through all government offices. The government also released state's new Industrial Policy, which focuses on the state's public sector enterprises.
