The West Bengal, (WB), India government will soon set up a centre of excellence in developing applications based on open source software.

The government is talking with IBM and Red Hat Linux to set up the first open source software centre. The software developed under open source is under a different kind of licensing system called GNU – General Public License. The students and teachers of Jadavpur University are involved in developing software applications. They are also developing e-Governance applications, which will help people to lower the cost of ownership to run computer systems at the state government offices. If both companies get involved in this project, it would be the first kind of global project in collaboration with the state government to develop open source applications.
