From ticket bookings to internet, Railways set for major overhaul

The Indian Railways is on a major revamping spree with its subsidiary Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) partnering with MobiKwik to power e-cash payments for its tatkal ticket booking service. The partnership would also ensure that the bookings do not get rejected due to payment delays.
“MobiKwik collaborated with Indian Railways to digitise payments on the IRCTC app and IRCTC FoodOnTrack app this year, and now we are powering payments for tatkal online, that will help users book tickets almost instantly. We are proud to support the largest rail network in Asia in their endeavour to digitise payments and provide the best payments experience to their users,” said Upasana Taku, Co-founder of MobiKwik.
This facility is available on www.services.irctc.co.in and users can book their tickets between 8 am and 12 pm daily. The Railway Ministry has also decided to revamp the Humsafar Express, which plies between Delhi and Gorakhpur.
The train’s coaches will be equipped with coffee and tea machines, CCTVs and GPS-based passenger information system.
In addition to these initiatives, telecom infrastructure provider RailTel plans to provide free hi-speed internet to passengers in premium long-distance trains of Maharashtra.
After 30 minutes usage, the browsing speed will be reduced on mainline and suburban trains. RailTel is looking at a public-private partnership (PPP) model to implement the project and has invited a request for proposal for the project.
“Provision of Wi-Fi in trains is being monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). We aim to roll out the first such rakes, both electrical multiple units for Mumbai suburban and long-distance premium trains, by 2018,” a senior RailTel official said.
The Indian Railways is also planning to reduce its carbon footprint by accelerating electrification of tracks.
