Mobile TowersThe Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will soon float paper enabling them to regularly track the network quality of mobile operators.

At present, TRAI comes out with status of service at state or telecom circle level. TRAI Chairman RS Sharma said, “Quality of service provided by each base tower station (BTS) should be disclosed to customers.” However, he is unsure of its feasibility as of now.

TRAI will come out with a position paper in this regard in a couple of weeks, Sharma added.

“We are going to establish institutional mechanism for this purpose. A dashboard will be provided to citizen of this country to see status of Quality of Service (QoS) in a area,” Sharma said.

To examine call drop problem entirety, the regulator is planning to make it mandatory for telecom operators to disclose their network capacities periodically.

“Data received from operators will be put on a map to show the status of QoS,” the Chairman said. The data will not be live; however it would be very latest.

TRAI has already put forth a paper, proposing a compensation mechanism for call drops and is seeking comments from stakeholders if it should be in the form of free calls or financial incentive.

Expressing serious concern over the issue of call drops, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently asked officials to resolve the issue urgently.

The Prime Minister asked as to what steps were being taken to address this problem, which, he said, directly affects the common man. He directed the officials to ensure that the problems in voice connectivity do not extend to data connectivity in the future.
