Maharashtra Government appoints two new MERC members

The Government of Maharashtra has appointed two new members to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) — Mukesh Khullar, a 1985-batch IAS officer and Iqbal Bohari, a former judge of the family court in Nagpur.

Formerly Khullar was Additional Chief Secretary and in-charge of the IAS establishment in Mantralaya. He took voluntary retirement.

It maybe noted that despite the presence of Anand Kulkarni, as the MERC chairperson, the commission’s working had come to a standstill from January 17 due to the High Court’s order that disallowed a single-bench from hearing matters.

Additionally, the Supreme Court had observed that one of the members of the commission should be from the judiciary.

To comply with the order, the energy department had issued an advertisement for the appointment of two members—one from the administration and the other from the judiciary. The search committee, headed by Justice A R Deshpande ,shortlisted the names of Khullar and Bohari.
