Aadhaar linking extended ‘indefinitely’ by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar to various services till it delivers order on judgment on the constitutional validity of the bio-metric identification scheme and Aadhaar Act.

‘SC extends March 31 deadline for Aadhaar linkages till the constitution bench delivers judgement on the matter,’ read the SC order.

The deadline was coming to an end on 31st March.  The five-judge constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, has extended the deadline ‘indefinitely’ till the judgement is pronounced.

Terming the case as subjudiced, the Court said that till the final order comes, Aadhaar cannot be insisted to be mandatory.

Last week, the government had hinted that this deadline may be extended if required.

Attorney general K.K.Venugopal had told the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court that the centre had extended the deadline in the past and can do it again.
