On the lines of Digital India campaign, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) floated a tender for enabling 38 Central Universities within India to make them Wi-Fi enabled. Amidst a fierce competition amongst 12 companies, IL&FS Technologies Limited (ITL) won the tender after being evaluated on various parameters set by the ministry.
The purpose of this project is to provide all the 38 Central Universities a Wi-Fi enabled Campus network which would be connected to the National Knowledge Network (NKN). MHRD has envisaged National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) as a centrally sponsored scheme to leverage the potential of ICT, in providing personalized and interactive knowledge modules over the internet/intranet for all the learners in these universities anytime and anywhere.
Implementation involves surveying the campus of the universities to understand the area, access points, switches, controllers and other important factors. Later, designing, installing, commissioning, integrating and maintaining of active network components takes place at the campus. ITL will also provide training to the universities along with onsite support for 2 years.
Basis the price and the quality of services provided by ITL, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was the first University to accept the project in their campus which is the largest campus in India with 28 kms diameter. The project has commenced at BHU and is expected to get completed within a few months.
The implementation of the project will be extended to three more Universities namely – Nagaland University, H.N.B. Garhwal University and Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan in October.
On this occasion, Durga Prasad, CEO, IL&FS Technologies Limited said, “In our endeavor to bring global technologies to India, we are delighted to get this project and will extend the services to more Universities. Education is the backbone of any country and it is a great opportunity for us to provide technical facilities to the youth of our nation.”
ITL’s expertise lies in developing a unified data-driven infrastructure to transform service models and experiences for citizens and government agencies. Headquartered in Gurgaon, ITL has delivered successful IT solutions in India, South East Asia and SAARC nations.
